2013 – The Year in First Line Retrospect

It’s hard to believe it’s almost a New Year.  I had started this post for this week’s Wicked Wednesday prompt – of course it is about the New Year, since it falls on New Year’s Day! – but realized that rather than taking a look forward (at least for this post) I am going to look backward for a moment. I’m going to take you through a 2013 retrospective, before I look forward to 2014.

I’ll follow the same template as I did in 2010 and 2012, (for the years 2009 & 2011, respectively) when I participated in a meme called “First Lines” (or some such thing) that I had found elsewhere (you can read the genesis of it in my previous posts.) Basically it goes like this: take the first line of the first post of each of the months in the previous year and copy them here, with links to the old post. It was a lot of fun the times I did it before, and took me on an enjoyable walk down Memory Lane. I hope it does you, too.

(Edit: As I mention in this post: Happy Half-Year, I’m going to create a Linky Tool for anyone that wants to join in and post linksto their own “First Lines” Retrospective at the end of this post.)

2013 – The Year Captured in First Lines

January How We Got Kinky, Part 3
“You never know what it’s going to be that will trip that ‘trigger.’”

In 2010 I had written a series of articles for Eden Cafe in which I talked about kink and, in this case, how my Ex and I had come to kink. When Eden Cafe underwent some architecture changes, though, I realized that the articles could possibly get lost in the shuffle, and I felt they told a good enough story that I wanted my readers here to have the opportunity to read them.

This was only one of two posts I made that January, because I was working on the change-over from my Pieces of Jade WordPress blog to being self-hosted here on Kink & Poly.

FebruaryWelcome to Kink & Poly!
“So hello again! You made it – I made it! Here we are, together again. :-)”

And this, of course, is my debut post! What an accomplishment that was. I had worked so hard on it and had to learn so much to put it all together, but I had such a good time doing so. And it was worth every minute of effort. I LOVE Pieces of Jade’s new home on the web.

MarchRejection Makes Me Better
I am sitting here contemplating a story before I revise it; I am living with it, letting it live in me awhile, before taking the scalpel to it and surgically removing the bad parts.

One of the things I am most proud of in the move to K&P was finding a way to integrate all three “parts” of myself: the kinky lover of two men; the “vanilla” side: mother, sister, daughter, career woman; and the writer, all into one space. I know that some people didn’t like the change (keep it all kink or all vanilla was the occasional feedback I got) but I knew that wasn’t true to myself, to who I am and how I live: the pieces of me intersect and co-mingle all the time. This post was one of those that started in the “writer” part, but as I wrote it I knew I would revisit the topic again, from yet another piece of me, and in fact I was just working on a post the other day in which I referred back to this one.

AprilWicked Wednesday – A Scavenger Hunt Bridge
“One of the things I love about the Scavenger Hunt is seeing how and where all the other players captured their snaps for that particular location.”

MayWicked Wednesday: Comment Masturbation & Orgasms
“Marie Rebel’s prompt this week for Wicked Wednesday was ‘Comment: Take a comment that has been left on one your blog posts and turn it into a new post.'”

As I say in the very next line, being me, I couldn’t *quite* follow the rules. But I had an awful lot of fun with this post, in which I debated the merits of taking the “National Masturbation Month Challenge”: masturbating at least once a day.

June Kink of the Week – Figging
“I’m going to break this up into two posts, because I actually experienced figging for the first time as part of a Picture Request some time ago, but I’d like to keep that separate, since I’d also like to discuss figging, and not just show pictures.”

Yay for figging! (That’s all.)

JulyHappy Half Year – Goals & Accomplishments
“…as I was saying before I got distracted, since I hadn’t done one for 2012, and since I am a bit of a goal-oriented person, I thought I would take this opportune moment – one half of the year is gone, and one-half of the year lies ahead (are you a half-gone or a half-ahead kind of person?) ;-) to assess my “progress” in some goals I have set for myself over the past year.”

Oh, now I have read back over the list and write another post assessing the rest of the year!

AugustScavenger Hunt – Car Park
“More exhibitionism!”

I did a lot of Scavenger Hunts this year…

SeptemberSinful Shopping“Now that Anal August is over (recap to come!), W has turned his thoughts elsewhere: back to my cunt, and specifically, back to my rings, which we had recently replaced with segmented titanium rings.”

October #KOTW – W’s  Perspective: The Voyeur’s Accomplice
“A person who has become a very good friend totally changed my perspective on voyeurism.”

Those were actually W’s words. This year the Kink of the Week opened up W to the idea of posting some of his thoughts on kink – something I couldn’t be happier about.

November Punishment Dynamics
“Last week’s Kink of the Week post on BDSM relationships that include punishment as a component really got me thinking. I didn’t think I’d have much to say about it, since I don’t have a relationship that has a punishment dynamic, but the more I read others’ posts on the topic, the more I struggled to clarify my own – admittedly muddled and ambivalent – feelings about punishment in any relationship: vanilla, parent/child, or BDSM.

This post really embodied the best of what I have come to love so much about Kink of the Week – so many differing perspectives, so much food for thought, and, ultimately, so much fodder for discussion.

DecemberMy Band of Merry Gentlemen
“I love holiday music!”

The first of my music-themed holiday posts for 2013.

And that’s a wrap!

  1. Marie Rebelle

Last year I said I was going to do a first line post this year, but I did not get around to do it. I love that when I read through yours, I could even recall some of the posts you have done during 2013. Your new home is fabulous and Kink of the Week is a wonderful meme, which has taught me a lot about kink and myself in 2013! Thank you for that and I look forward to more of that this year.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, Jade!

There is no time limit to it, dear, so feel free to add your link if you do decide to. And happy new year to you as well! :-)

  2. KaziG

That’s a great way to look back at a year :)
Maybe next year I’ll be able to do that and have it make sense, this past year was just too choppy for me.

    Happy New Year!

I totally understand that, Kazi! I skipped a year as well. But it was such a wonderful way for *me* to remember the year that I had to do it again this year. Maybe you’ll feel like it next year! :-)

I love this idea, and it proved irresistable. It is so nice to read the first line, and then read a behind-the-scene or quick summary of each.
It has been such a pleasure meeting you, reading you, contributing to your meme. Thank you for the year and best of the luck in the upcoming one.

  5. Mia

Wonderful new home. Wonderful new Meme. What a great way to do a recap of the year! Think I will have to try that sometime!!

Wishing you all the very best for 2014.

Thank you Mia! It is an awful lot of fun…link yours here if you do decide to do it!

Best wishes to you in the new year!

  6. Molly

This is a great idea…. I wonder if I have time in the next week or so to put on of these together. Is there a time limit or are you leaving the page open for a little while? I think it would be a great exercise for me as well as a wander down 2013 memory lane

    Ps… Happy New Year!
