I spent a good portion of the day today doing fall yard maintenance at W’s, a favorite activity. This weekend was wonderfully warm after a week of crisp fall temperatures, and I knew it might be our last chance to do yardwork without freezing our tails off. I love the fall in Missouri – it may be my favorite time of the year – but as I raked up dead leaves, pulled up the summer annuals that are already starting to die off and observed how our kitchen garden is starting to wilt and yellow, I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic for the summer already.
I remembered the day we planted the basil, tomatoes, peppers and rosemary, and the many fine meals our little kitchen garden had enhanced. The squash had never taken hold, but we’d had several caprese salads with the tomatoes and basil! And oh yes, yummy rosemary roasted red potatoes…
I remembered too a day working in the yard with W, weeding the herb garden and getting sassy.
Me: “I didn’t wear any panties.”
Me: “Wouldn’t it be a shame if I flashed your neighbors accidentally?”
Me (finally, exasperated by his inattention): “Oh no, I hope they aren’t looking!”
Him: (finally showing some interest.) “Well if you’re going to do it you should make it worth their while and get out from behind the plant.”
Me: “That’s more like it!”
When we got done I said, “Hey, I got an accidental Scavenger Hunt: Garden!” But then I realized we already had Garden (Public.) Still…if there is a “public” garden category, that implies there is “private” one, right? It’s a private yard, but still very open (no privacy fence.) So…maybe it counts as a new location, different from Public Garden?
