Calls for Submissions

This is by no means a comprehensive list, nor do I vouch for its accuracy, so check the information before submitting.  This is merely a listing of current calls that I myself am interested in and I thought it might be useful to others too who are thinking about submitting short fiction for publication.

I get most of my Calls for Submissions from the ERWA (Erotic Readers and Writers Association) website. Go there for a more exhaustive list, including listings for different market types (ie websites, on-going, magazines, novels, etc.) as well as tips and resources for writers.  For the aspiring writer (and even those more experienced), an excellent discussion on what works and what doesn’t in erotica can be found in “Secrets of a Sex Writer: Erotica Writes and Wrongs” written by one of my favorite writers and editors of erotica (and an editor who has published several of my stories), Rachel Kramer Bussel.

Do not rely on the information you find here alone. Always go to an editor’s submission guidelines before submitting. And then FOLLOW THEM.  The Number One pet peeve mentioned by editors at the Erotic Writer’s Conference I attended was submissions that did not meet the submission guidelines.

Check the payment and contract terms carefully. Know what they are asking for; know what you are signing.  Don’t know what “all world rights in all formats” means? Ask. And then if you don’t like the terms, ask for what you will accept. The contract is a starting point. An editor or publisher may not change the terms, but you’ll never know until you ask.

I do my best to keep the list updated, but again, always check directly with the editor’s submission information/guidelines before submitting.

Hot Highlanders and Wild Knights
Editor: Delilah Devlin
Publisher: Cleis Press
Deadline: June 14, 2013 December 31, 2013
Payment: $50.00 USD and two copies of the published book upon publication

Hot Highlanders And Wild Knights is open to all authors.

Editor/Author Delilah Devlin is looking for historically-themed stories—of knights and men in kilts—for a romantic erotica anthology tentatively entitled Hot Highlanders And Wild Knights: Erotic Romance for Women.

Let your fantasies run wild to a time where men wearing heavy armor or thick tartans sent a spirited young maiden’s (or salty widow’s) heart fluttering. Imagine a primitive, simpler time where survival required physical strength and men were judged for their fierce loyalty and unshakeable honor.

Don’t feel you have to restrict your imaginings to European “knights” (Crusaders, Highlanders, Normans & Saxons, or tournament fighters)—dream about Vikings, Huns, Persians…or maybe a Samurai. A few time-travel stories may be considered as well.

Delilah will be looking for stories rich in sensory detail that explore women’s forbidden desires. A knight serving a conquering king enters a keep his armor tarnished and smeared with dirt and blood. He scans the great hall until his gaze snags on a woman whose frightened face is nonetheless set into stubborn lines as she meets his piercing gaze… Imagine what happens next…

NEW ADVICE TO AUTHORS: Don’t neglect the world-building and external plots that should weave throughout your stories. Don’t use excessively flowery or hard to read language. This is medieval romance intended for entertainment. Many of the submissions I received were the familiar arranged marriage concepts. Too many included the “watching the maiden bathe in a river” scene. Also, too many included sexual activity with virgins that happened too soon or with the virgin seemingly too experienced to be believable. Try for something unique about the characters, the premise, or the setting. Much of the sexual activities in the stories I have are very vanilla—some kink would be refreshing! Light paranormal will be considered.

HOT HIGHLANDERS AND WILD KNIGHTS will seek stories to satisfy the reader who craves the romantic idea of that hard but questing man while exploring stories set in the Dark Ages. While most will likely take place in Europe, Ireland and Britain,  more exotic international settings will be considered. Traditional themes/tropes can be used, but writers are encouraged to create tales that surprise. Delilah seeks unique stories from authors with strong voices, and above all, she’s looking to be seduced by tales filled with vivid imagery and passion.

Published authors with an established historical world may use that setting for their original short story.

Keeping in mind that this volume is targeted at women, the editor seeks hetero stories, but will consider bisexual or lesbian encounters and polyamorous relationships WITHIN that ultimately hetero relationship. This is erotic romance, so don’t hold back on the heat. Stories can be vanilla or filled with kink, but don’t miss describing the connection between strong-willed individuals learning to trust and love one another. Keep in mind there must be a romantic element with a happy-for-now or happy-ever-after ending. Strong plots, engaging characters, and unique twists are the ultimate goal. Please no reprints. These must be original stories.

How to submit: Prepare your 2,000 to 4,500 words story in a double-spaced, Arial, 12 point, black font Word document with pages numbered (.doc, NOT.docx) OR rich text format. Indent the first line of each paragraph half an inch and double space (regular double spacing, do not add extra lines between paragraphs or do any other irregular spacing). US grammar (double quotation marks around dialogue, etc.) is required.

In your document at the top left of the page, include your legal name (and pseudonym, if applicable), mailing address, and 50 words or less bio in the third person, and send to hothighlanderswildknights@gmail.com. If you are using a pseudonym, please provide your real name and pseudonym and make it clear which one you’d like to be credited as. Authors may submit up to 2 stories. Delilah hopes to respond with decisions in March 2014. The publisher has final approval over the stories included in the manuscript.

Payment will be $50.00 USD and two copies of the published book upon publication. Contributors retain the rights to their work, although the editor requests the courtesy of authors not republishing their work until at least 6 months after the publication of this anthology.

Direct any questions you have regarding your story or the submission process to Delilah at hothighlanderswildknights@gmail.com.

Space Opera Erotica NEW
Editor: Todd Elzey
Publisher: Sci-Fi and Paranormal Erotica <http://scifiandparanormalerotica.com>
Deadline: January 1, 2014
Payment: $15 per story
Rights: First World Anthology Rights

We are currently seeking 10 stories for a Space Opera Erotica anthology.  We will pay $15 per story plus offer an About the Author page in anthology promoting you and your other works.

So what is a space opera?  A space opera is a colorful, dramatic, large-scale science fiction adventure set in the distant future and based in space or on another planet.  Space operas are usually focused on a sympathetic and heroic central character and plot action. Stories are characteristically optimistic in tone, but often deals with war, piracy, military virtues, and very large-scale action.  In other words there are usually large stakes.  If you need an example of typical space operas try Star Trek, the original or re-worked Battlestar Galactica, or Star Wars.

While stories must focus on a space opera theme, they must also be erotic.  Sex scenes should be hot.  Creativity is encouraged. However, keep in mind that the book’s primary focus is a general heterosexual market. This doesn’t mean that all stories need to be heterosexual.  But stories that stray from the heterosexual perspective should be designed to challenge the reader’s heterosexual viewpoint.  In other words turn the reader on and make them wonder what it would be like to engage in an encounter that is outside of their comfort zone.  Also, keep in mind that while the actual sex should be creative, it must also be realistic.  Don’t describe a sexual position that is physically impossible for your characters to perform. Finally, all sex scenes must be presented positively and must contribute to the plot or character development.

Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica 13
Editor: Maxim Jakubowski
Publisher: Running Press in USA, Constable & Robinson in UK
Deadline: February 15th, 2014
Payment: £75 per story, which at current exchange rate is approx $120.
Rights sought: non exclusive World English language anthology rights only

This is the longest-running best short stories of the year anthology. I am seeking submissions of stories previously published, whether in print, digitally or online, during calendar year 2013.

Any length up to 8,000 words. although am NOT into ‘quickies’ (ie under 2,000 words or so) unless they are truly exceptional. I also occasionally accept unpublished material, but that tends to be from established authors in the field so tend to be very selective in that particular area.

As to what I like, my tastes are known to be idiosyncratic, but I refer you to any of the previous 18 volumes of the The Mammoth Erotica series (there were six unnumbered volumes before we switched to numbering them) or other anthologies I’ve edited. I’m broadminded, but tend to prefer strong characterisation and some modicum of plot as opposed to merely mood pieces.

Submit by mail as tear sheets, manuscripts or photocopies (NOT e-mail, please as I cannot face the prospect of reading over a thousand or so submissions on a computer screen).

Multiple submissions are OK, but not more than three at a time, please. If I accept your story, I will then require it as Word document at a later date only.

Corsets & Clockwork: Steampunk Erotica NEW
Editor: Nicole Gestalt
Publisher: House of Erotica <http://www.houseoferoticabooks.com/>
Deadline: February 28th 2014 (Early Submissions are preferred.)
Payment: Royalties will be split 40% of the net profits with contributing authors, exact values will be given once we know how many stories will be in the final anthology.
Rights: Six Years
Word Count: 5k – 15k

Pairings: Any Heat: Any level from romance to burning the pages of the book!
Submission limit: Authors may submit up to two stories.

Editor/ Author Nicole Gestalt is looking for stories set in a might-have-been Victorian setting filled with clockwork machines and airships. Think Jules Verne or League of Extraordinary Gentleman, think Sherlock Holmes with clockwork machines and the film Wild, Wild West.

The stories do not have to be focused in the Victorian era they could be modern day stories but still with the Victorian clockwork style. They could even be off world think spaceships powered by nothing but steam, or mighty metal boats propelled by sails powered by the rays of the sun. Be as inventive as you can but please don’t forget the story line and the relationships! Since this is an erotic anthology there should be on the page sex scenes however don’t forget the interaction between the characters and the relationship they have. The stories should either end with a Happy-For-Now or a Happy-Ever-After it would have to be a amazingly good story for me to select it if it didn’t (but I am well prepared to have my opinion changed on that).

Nicole will be looking for stories that stand out so please don’t just set your stories in London, they can be set anywhere in the world or even off world. Don’t be afraid to experiment

The No-No’s: No scat, bestiality, under age sex, golden showers, rape or forced sex or incest of any kind and necrophilia (that does not include intelligent undead such as Vampires). If in doubt please ask

Indent the first line of each paragraph half an inch and double space (using normal double spacing please do not add an extra line between the paragraphs). Double quotation marks! Please submit your final, complete and totally edited version of the story. File format: .doc or .rtf. Since this is a British publisher UK spelling and grammar is greatly preferred.

In your document at the top left of the page please include you legal name, mailing address and a fifty words or less author bio written in the third person. If you are using a pen-name please provide both and make it clear which one you wish to use.

Please email your submissions to: gestaltanthologies@gmail.com

Authors must own their rights to the stories and not have had them published anywhere else. Please note the publisher has final approval over the stories included in the manuscript.

Best Bondage Erotica 2015 will collect the best bondage erotica stories around, focusing on a range of techniques, implements, characters and scenarios, from newbies to seasoned bondage players and everything in between. I will consider up to two stories per author.

Pairings: Any
Heat Level: Anything from romantic and erotic to burning hot

Author Jillian Boyd is on the hunt for hot historical erotica stories set in those heady days of the Roaring Twenties. Whether it’s the glamour of the flapper, the spirit of Gatsby or the whisky-soaked excesses of the speakeasies, I want you to make the Twenties sizzle and spark with red-hot lust.

The stories needn’t all be about flappers and gangsters (although I’d love to have some in the collection) let your imagination fly! But don’t forget the storyline and the sizzling sex, of course. I want characters that fly off the page and spark off each other. I want fun, frolics and occasional frivolity.

As far as the ending goes, a Happy-Ever-After is good, but I have no problems with a Happy-For-Now.

The No-No’s: No scat, bestiality, under age sex, golden showers, rape or forced sex or incest of any kind and necrophilia.

Payment: Royalties will be split 40% of the net profits with contributing authors, exact values will be given once we know how many stories will be in the final anthology.

Sex Toy Erotica anthology NEW
Deadline: April 1, 2014
Editor: Rachel Kramer Bussel
Publisher: Cleis Press

Erotica editor Rachel Kramer Bussel is looking for your hottest sex toy erotica stories. Sex toys can include items such as vibrators, dildos, butt plugs, as well as items like handcuffs and other restraints, nipple clamps, paddles, cock rings, whips and canes, sex furniture, etc., but feel free to get as creative as you can with the definition of “sex toy” and its use in your stories. The story can focus on the sex toy or simply incorporate the use of a sex toy into the narrative. Sex toys should be given context and description, but shouldn’t read like catalog copy. Let the story you’re telling drive the detail used to convey exactly what the sex toy/s is/are and their purpose within the story.

The final book will contain a wide range of characters, scenarios, sexualities, locations, motivations and toys, from the types listed above that you’d find at a sex toy retailer, to everyday household objects, to fictional sex toys. The sky’s the limit! All characters should be over 18. No nonconsensual scenes. No bestiality, scat or incest. No poetry. Please see my anthologies Orgasmic, Women in Lust, and Fast Girls for examples of the kinds of stories I’m looking for. Unpublished stories only (this includes blogs and websites).

How to submit: Send double spaced Times or Times New Roman 12 point black font Word document with pages numbered (.doc, not .docx) OR RTF of 1,500-4,000 word story. Indent the first line of each paragraph half an inch and double space (regular double spacing, do not add extra lines between paragraphs or do any other irregular spacing). US grammar (double quotation marks around dialogue, etc.) required. Only submit your final, best version of the story you are submitting. Do not send multiple versions of the same story. Include your legal name (and pseudonym if applicable), mailing address, and 50 word or less bio in the third person to sextoyantho@gmail.com. If you are using a pseudonym, please provide your real name as well as your pseudonym and make it clear which one you’d like to be credited as. For the smoothest editorial process, please double check that the byline you are using with your submission is the byline you’d want published. You will receive a confirmation within 72 hours. I will get back to you by September 2014. I cannot give any feedback on rejected submissions.

Payment: $50 and 2 copies of the book on publication

Deadline: April 1, 2014 (earlier submissions strongly encouraged)
